A meniscus in the knee is a rubbery C-shaped structure that cushions the adjacent surfaces of the shin bone (tibia) and thigh bone (femur) at the level of the knee joint. Meniscus acts like shock absorbers. Each knee has two distinct menisci: the medial (the inner aspect of the knee) and lateral (the outer part of the knee). Medial meniscus tears are more common, and lateral meniscus tears are more common when the ACL is injured. Injuries to the meniscus may lead to eventual wear and tear of the knee (arthritis).
Certain activities that forcefully twist or rotate your knee, such as aggressive pivoting or sudden stops and turns result in meniscus tears.
The degenerative meniscus in old age is susceptible to tear with minimal trivial trauma (i.e.-twisting the knee getting into the car).
Stable tears can be managed conservatively with PRP injections and physical rehab. Unstable tears and tears associated with other ligament injuries are repaired with the help of a meniscal repair system (stitches) using a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique.
